Galatians 5:1
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
Explanation:
Jesus made you free, so don’t go back to acting like you’re stuck following a bunch of rules to be close to God.
Galatians 5:2
Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you.
Explanation:
If you think doing certain things like circumcision makes you good with God, then you’re not trusting Jesus to save you.
Galatians 5:3
I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses.
Explanation:
If you want to follow the old rules, you have to follow all of them, not just some!
Galatians 5:4
For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.
Explanation:
If you try to be good enough for God by obeying rules, you’re not trusting Jesus—and you miss out on His grace.
Galatians 5:5
But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us.
Explanation:
People who follow the Holy Spirit trust God and wait for His goodness, not their own.
Galatians 5:6
For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.
Explanation:
Rules don’t matter—what matters is believing in Jesus and showing love.
Galatians 5:7
You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?
Explanation:
You were doing great! Who got in your way and slowed you down?
Galatians 5:8
It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom.
Explanation:
God didn’t tell you to follow the rules again—He called you to live free!
Galatians 5:9
This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!
Explanation:
Bad ideas can spread fast—just like a tiny bit of yeast makes the whole dough rise.
Galatians 5:10
I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.
Explanation:
I believe God will help you stay on the right path. The one tricking you will have to answer to God.
Galatians 5:11
Dear brothers and sisters, if I were still preaching that you must be circumcised—as some say I do—why am I still being persecuted? If I were no longer preaching salvation through the cross of Christ, no one would be offended.
Explanation:
If I taught people needed to follow old rules, I wouldn’t be getting in trouble. But I preach Jesus—and that upsets some people.
Galatians 5:12
I just wish that those troublemakers who want to mutilate you by circumcision would mutilate themselves.
Explanation:
Paul is so frustrated with the people teaching bad things, he says they’re going too far and hurting others.
Galatians 5:13
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
Explanation:
God gave you freedom, but that doesn’t mean you should do bad things—use your freedom to love and help others!
Galatians 5:14
For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Explanation:
All God’s rules can be summed up with this: treat others the way you want to be treated.
Galatians 5:15
But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.
Explanation:
If you keep fighting and being mean, you’ll hurt each other badly. Be careful!
Galatians 5:16
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
Explanation:
Let God’s Spirit lead you. Then you won’t want to do the wrong stuff.
Galatians 5:17
The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
Explanation:
Inside you, your old self and God’s Spirit are always battling. That’s why it can feel hard to do the right thing.
Galatians 5:18
But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
Explanation:
If the Holy Spirit is leading you, you don’t have to live by the old rules anymore.
Galatians 5:19–21
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Explanation:
If you follow your bad desires, it leads to all kinds of hurtful things. People who live like that all the time and don’t change won’t be part of God’s Kingdom.
Galatians 5:22–23
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Explanation:
When God’s Spirit is in you, it grows beautiful things—like love, joy, and kindness. These are always good!
Galatians 5:24
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
Explanation:
If you belong to Jesus, you leave your old bad ways behind—like hanging them on the cross with Him.
Galatians 5:25
Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
Explanation:
If God’s Spirit gives us life, we should let Him guide everything we do.
Galatians 5:26
Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.
Explanation:
Let’s not be full of ourselves or pick fights or get jealous. Let’s love instead.
Galatians Chapter 5: Live Free and Full of the Spirit
For Parents and Children
Galatians 5 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible for family life. Paul opens with this bold reminder:
“Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure you stay free.” (Galatians 5:1)
The Galatians were being pulled back into rule-following religion, like they had to earn God’s love. But Paul says no—Jesus set you free from that! Don’t go back to being a slave.
That message hits home for parents. We often carry silent guilt or feel pressure to “do it all right.” But Paul’s words tell us: you don’t have to earn God’s love—you already have it. That kind of freedom lets us parent from a place of grace, not fear.
Paul goes on to explain how this freedom works. It doesn’t mean doing whatever we want. It means we’re free to live by the Holy Spirit—who fills us with things like love, peace, and patience.
He gives a list of the “fruit of the Spirit” in verses 22–23. These are the qualities that grow in us when we stay close to Jesus. Not because we try super hard, but because His Spirit lives in us.
For kids, this chapter teaches something beautiful: when we follow Jesus, He helps us become more loving, kind, joyful, and gentle. That’s how others know we belong to Him.
-
Talk about fruit: Ask your kids which fruit of the Spirit they’d like to grow in. Share which one you’re praying for in your own life.
